SSU and National Police apprehend man behind explosion at postal terminal in Kyiv on 5 June

In conjunction with the National Police, the Security Service detained a man in hot pursuit – his actions led to an explosion on 5 June at a Nova Poshta terminal in the Obolon district of Kyiv. This resulted in the death of one employee and injuries to two others.

The incident occurred in the morning while parcels were being unloaded; one of these detonated.

According to the investigation, the parcel contained fragmentation munitions, the shipment of which is prohibited. The sender of this dangerous parcel was a 35-year-old man from Donetsk oblast who currently lives in Zaporizhzhia.

Disregarding safety regulations, he sent the illegally acquired weapon to an acquaintance in Kyiv.

SSU operatives and National Police officers detained the suspect at his home in the Zaporizhzhia region. During urgent searches, the law enforcement discovered information about the parcel’s contents and the dispatch on the suspect’s mobile phone.

SSU investigators have notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 263.1 of the CCU (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosive substances).

The Solomyanskyi District Court of Kyiv imposed custody as a measure of restraint on the suspect.

The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the offence.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as the Zaporizhzhia SSU Office, under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
