SSU and National Police detain enemy agent behind car bombing in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi district within hours

The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police have detained an enemy agent who committed a terrorist attack on 4 January this year in Kyiv. She was apprehended in hot pursuit within a few hours after the attack.

The woman blew up a Ukrainian defender’s car in Obolonskyi district of the capital. As a result of the incident, the serviceman and his acquaintance suffered injuries of varying severity, including shrapnel wounds to both legs and concussion.

The investigation established that the terrorist attack was plotted and carried out by a 24-year-old local unemployed woman recruited by russia. She came to the attention of the enemy intelligence services while looking for easy money on Telegram.

To blow up the car, the agent received instructions from the occupiers on how to make an improvised explosive device.

Money for the IED components were transferred to the asset’s bank card. Part of the russian funds was sent to her father’s bank account, which she provided to her handler in russia.

After preparing the bomb, the agent placed it under the car of a Ukrainian serviceman who had arrived in Kyiv on leave from the front line.

To record the terrorist attack, the perpetrator installed a hidden camera with a power bank and remote access for the russian service near the location.

The explosion occurred when the victim approached the car and opened the boot.

The law enforcement detained the terrorist in one of Kyiv’s shopping and entertainment centres, where she was hiding after committing the crime.

A SIM card from the ‘video trap’ and a mobile phone were seized from the suspect during the search.

SSU investigators will notify the detainee of suspicion under Article 258.1 of the CCU – terrorist act. The suspect faces up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region in cooperation with the National Police under the procedural supervision of Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
