The SSU Counterintelligence exposed a Russian agent who, under the cover of a town council official, gathered intelligence on military facilities in Kharkiv region.

According to the investigation, the Head of Sector for civil defence, defence and mobilization work and cooperation with law enforcement at a town council in Kharkiv region was recruited by a pseudo-official of the so-called ‘DNR’.

The agent was instructed by his handler to collect intelligence on military facilities in the region, personnel of Ukrainian special services and Armed Forces, as well as local patriots. Primarily, his supervisors were interested in the movement of military equipment convoys and types of weapons in the Ukrainian military.

The SSU established that the informant was part of a network of the so called ‘deputy of DNR People’s Council of the 2nd convocation’. Under the FSB supervision, they collected intelligence, which the Russian services used to conduct informational campaigns and destabilize the situation in Ukraine.

The agent has been detained and notified of suspicion of the crime under Article 258-3 (creation of a terrorist group or terrorist organization) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Investigation is underway to identify and bring to justice all individuals involved.

The SSU carried out the operation under the supervision of Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
