SSU dismantles FSB intelligence network guiding russian strikes on Kyiv and Odesa regions

The SSU Military Counterintelligence has detained one of the FSB’s sleeper agents in Kyiv, whom the enemy intelligence had kept on standby for 12 years.

As the investigation revealed, since February of this year, he had been gathering coordinates for a targeted russian missile strike on Kyiv, including the home of the Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

The FSB’s orders were carried out by an IT specialist from Mykolaiv. The aggressor had recruited him back in 2014 and ‘mothballed’ him for future missions.

Recently, the russian service activated the agent and instructed him to move to Kyiv to collect data on public figures against whom russia was planning sabotage and terrorist attacks.

Well-known politicians and representatives of Ukraine’s security and defence leadership were among the potential targets.

According to FSB instructions, the agent was to track the residential addresses and travel routes of these officials and report this information to his handler.

To carry out the tasks, the asset made new acquaintances, whom he then covertly used to obtain intelligence.

Very often, the perpetrator operated under the guise of providing services for the administration and maintenance of computer systems. He would then extract the ‘necessary’ information under the pretext of casual conversation.

Later, he recruited another IT specialist – an Odesa resident – to assist in his sabotage activities.

Together, they created a network of informants who leaked data on the deployment of Ukrainian troops.

The SSU detained the agent near his rented apartment in Kyiv. Simultaneously, his accomplice was apprehended in Odesa. Smartphones containing evidence of their work for the FSB were seized from during the searches.

SSU investigators have notified the detainees of their status as suspects under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspects are in custody and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operational and investigative actions were carried out jointly with investigators from the SSU Kyiv Office under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv Region Prosecutor’s Office.
