SBU exposes illegal sale of wiretapping and video surveillance equipment

SBU cyber specialists blocked an unauthorized sale of special equipment for illegal receiving of information. Such means are used by law enforcement agencies during operational and investigative activities, including covert audio and video recording.

In the city of Zaporizzhia, the SBU established that the management of a commercial entity organized the illegal business. The offenders had an official license to sell special technical means exclusively to government agencies.

However, they systematically sold special equipment to individuals contrary in violation of law. Customers could illegally conduct covert audio and video surveillance of Ukrainian citizens.

Within the investigation, the law enforcement officers received samples of special equipment, which the offenders illegally sold to "clients" using postal services. The experts confirmed that the devices are considered special technical equipment.

During the search of the company’s office, the SBU found and seized:

samples of special equipment;

accounting documents;

technical documentation;

other materials on illegal sale of special equipment;

electronic correspondence with customers.

Currently, the director, deputy director and an employee, who were responsible for the production of special technical equipment and documentation, received suspicion notices of illegal use of special technology for secret obtaining of information.

The investigation is ongoing.

The operation was carried out by the SBU Cybersecurity Department jointly with the SBU Main Investigation Department under the supervision of the Prosecutor General's Office.
