Zakarpattia region: SBU exposes illegal extraction of natural resources
The SBU has exposed and blocked large-scale extraction of sand-gravel mix in Zakarpattia region. During 2019-2021, managers of state water-supply companies assisted illegal business. Experts estimated that the state losses top UAH 250 m. (USD 9.3m).
The SBU exposed that illegal mining was organized in the bed of the Tisza River and its tributaries. 12 local businessmen were involved in the illegal activities.
In less than two years, perpetrators extracted and sold over 250,000 cubic meters of sand and gravel mix. According to official documents, they allegedly provided the state with free services for clearing and management of riverbeds.
Forensic examinations were conducted within the criminal proceedings. It is established that illegal mining led to the complete destruction of the soil cover and flora, which will take decades to restore.
The searches were conducted in the office of inter-district water management department, as well as in the offenders’ residences.
Three participants received suspicion notices:
- a manager of the inter-district water management department - of neglecting official duties;
- two company directors - of the violation of rules related to the protection of mineral resources.
Investigative actions are underway to bring to justice other persons involved in the illegal activities.
The operation was carried out jointly with the investigators of the Main National Police Department in Zakarpattia region, as well as the State Ecological Inspection of Ukraine under the supervision of the Zakarpattia Region Prosecutor's Office.
