SSU exposes enemy informant who collected intelligence on Ukrainian troops and critical infrastructure in border areas

In Chernihiv oblast, the SSU Counterintelligence detained an informant of russian special services who was collecting intelligence on Ukrainian Defence Forces and critical infrastructure in the border areas of the region.

The enemy was primarily interested in information on location of checkpoints, numbers of personnel, the AFU’s military equipment and construction of military aviation facilities in the area.

The offender also ‘drew’ schemes for the aggressor, describing local railway routes used by freight trains.

On the instructions of russian intelligence, the spy collected information on Chernihiv’s energy infrastructure.

The occupiers planned to use the obtained data to prepare a new series of air strikes.

The SSU documented the suspect’s criminal actions and detained him at his home. During the search, a mobile phone, used for communication with the aggressor, was seized.

According to the investigation, the enemy informant is a local resident, whom the invaders ‘noticed’ during the occupation of this territory due to his pro-kremlin views.

In May this year, a serviceman of a russian special service contacted the individual remotely and offered him cooperation in the war against Ukraine.

Subsequently, the informant started fulfilling the enemy’s assignments, on which he ‘reported’ to the aggressor in an anonymous chat. To conceal his activity, he immediately deleted all messages after each communication ‘session’.

However, the SSU gathered a substantiated evidence base against the perpetrator and served him with a notice of suspicion under Article 114-2 of the CCU (unauthorized dissemination of information on sending, transfer of weapons, armaments and ammunition to Ukraine, movement, transfer or deployment of the AFU).

The suspect is in custody, facing up to 12 years in prison. The investigation is ongoing.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Chernihiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
