SBU exposes child trafficking

In Kharkiv region, the SBU exposed a criminal interregional group coordinated by reproductive endocrinologists from Kyiv. The offenders organized trafficking of babies, allegedly within a surrogacy program.

For USD 60,000, foreigners obtained a newborn baby, as well as a full package of forged documents.

Allegedly, the organized group comprised the residents of Kyiv and Kharkiv regions, including the managers of a fertility clinic.

The offenders helped foreigners to enter into a sham marriage with Ukrainian women. Doctors then officially certified the infertility of clients’ wives. Such diagnosis is a ground for provision of surrogate motherhood services.

As soon as a woman gave birth to a child, a fake marriage was ended. The couple obtained the full parental authority and took a child abroad.

The SBU also documented the negligence of medical staff that lead to the death of newborns.

Within the criminal proceedings, the SBU conducted searches of the clinic and offenders’ residences.

During the searches, law enforcement seized mobile phones, documents and computers with evidence of illegal activity.

Currently, the offenders received suspicion notice of improper performance of professional duties by a medical or pharmaceutical worker; official forgery.

Investigative actions are underway to establish the offenders’ involvement in human trafficking.

The operation was carried out jointly with investigators of the Main National Police Department in Kharkiv region under the supervision of Kharkiv Region Prosecutor's Office.
