SBU exposes corrupt customs officials at Boryspil International Airport

SBU exposed a bribery scheme, set up by officials of Boryspil Airport customs checkpoint.

SBU established that the scheme was organized by two state customs inspectors, shielded by another officer from the customs authorities dealing with counteraction to customs offences and international cooperation. The offenders extorted money from passengers for not creating artificial obstacles during customs clearance. The officials threatened to withdraw goods from the passengers and file a repot for ostensible excess of permissible weight of goods.

In the framework of criminal proceedings, SBU officers documented several facts of bribe-taking. Reportedly, the suspects accepted regular bribe payments in the amount of 2000-4000 dollars. The “team” had seven shifts per month on average.

The offenders were detained red-handed. At present, the law enforcement officers check whether other customs officials, including top-managers, were involved into the illegal activity.

The investigation is ongoing. In particular, one of the offenders was arrested under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

The offenders are suspected of bribe-taking.

The operation was conducted jointly with officers of the Holosievo Directorate of the National Police and Internal Security Department (“Tsentr”) of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, under the supervision of the Kyiv Local Prosecutor’s office No.1.
