SSU supports Critical Infrastructure Law as it strengthens Ukraine’s defence capacity

The SSU supports the adoption of the Law ‘On Critical Infrastructure’, which will increase the level of protection of Ukraine’s strategic entities.

This was the main message of Mykola Medvediev, Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for Counterintelligence Protection of Economic Security, at the international conference Establishment and Perspectives of the State System of Critical Infrastructure Protection in Ukraine.

‘Present-day security environment, global challenges and threats indicate the need to form an integrated protection system of Ukraine. That is why the SSU supports the adoption of the Law ‘On Critical Infrastructure’. Hopefully, this document will clearly define the roles of state and security agencies in the system of critical infrastructure protection,’ Mykola Medvediev underscored.

According to the SSU representative, currently Ukraine needs clear models of interaction as well as platforms to respond to any interferences in the critical infrastructure. ‘Moreover, we need to develop mechanisms for rapid recovery after crises. The draft law prepared for second reading should specifically determine the responsibilities of state institutions in ensuring continuous functioning of critical infrastructure,’ Mykola Medvediev highlighted.

Currently, even without relevant legislation in force, the SSU is protecting critical infrastructure and the state’s economic potential. Since the beginning of 2021, the Service prevented illegal takeover of 8 strategic enterprises of Ukraine. Moreover, state ownership of fifty real estate properties was restored.

Over the 9 months of this year, the SSU efforts helped to prevent budget losses of UAH 43 b. Working proactively, the Service exposed and averted the attempted crimes.
