SBU blocks smuggling channel of counterfeit cigarettes from Middle East to EU

The SBU has blocked a transnational smuggling channel of excisable products to the European Union. At the Boryspil International Airport, law enforcement officers seized more than 10 tons of contraband cigarettes, totaling more than UAH 10 m.

Several Kyiv customs officials are involved in the organization of illegal activities.

It was established that the scheme participants planned to smuggle wholesale consignments of tobacco products with counterfeit excise stamps from one of the Middle East countries to the EU. To conceal products, dealers entered false information in customs declarations.

The "route" of the goods passed through the territory of Ukraine. According to operative data, after moving across the state border, the dealers planned to smuggle it to the EU outside the established checkpoints.

Within the criminal proceedings under smuggling and abuse of power or official position investigative actions for bringing to responsibility of organizers and participants of illegal activity are under way.

Measures to expose the offense were carried out by officers of the SBU Main Directorate for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime together with investigators of the SBU Main Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor's Office.
