SSU declares five ruscists suspects – commanders behind missile strike on UNESCO sites in Lviv

The Security Service of Ukraine has gathered evidence against the command of the russian armed groupings involved in the missile strike on Lviv on the night of 4 September 2024.

This was russia’s attack on civilian infrastructure in the area of the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Ensemble of the Historic Centre of Lviv.

During the air attack, the russians used two Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles and one Kh-101 cruise missile.

The investigation established that the overall command of the strike was carried out by major general Sergei Kuvaldin, commander of the long-range aviation of the russian air force.

He involved his first deputy, colonel Sergei Shevel, in planning the attack.

They tasked the units of the 22nd heavy bomber aviation division, commanded by major general Nikolai Varpakhovich, with organizing the attack on civilian targets.

He then ordered colonel Oleg Skitsky, commander of russia’s 121st heavy bomber regiment, to carry out the missile strike on Lviv.

The ruscists also involved the 44th special purpose aviation regiment, commanded by another russian colonel, Denis Akhmadeev, in the air strike on the city.

Investigators of the Security Service have notified these commanders in absentia of suspicion under Articles 28.2 and 438.2 of the CCU (war crimes that caused serious consequences, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy).

Efforts to bring the war criminals to justice are underway.

The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
