SSU declares militant suspect in absentia for carving 'Z' on forehead of captured Ukrainian soldier

The SSU has identified another ruscist who committed war crimes against Ukrainians.

The suspect is Volodymyr Polupoltinnykh, commander of the so-called ‘6th Separate Motorized Rifle Cossack Regiment of the LNR’, a unit created by russian forces and integrated into the russian federation's Southern Military District.

According to the investigation, on June 10, 2022, the perpetrator ordered his subordinates to torture Ukrainian soldiers who had been captured during hostilities on the eastern front.

It has been established that Polupoltinnykh took a direct part in tortures. In the course of torturing, he used a knife to carve the letter ‘Z’ onto the forehead of the Ukrainian prisoner of war.

The suspect is a resident of the temporarily occupied part of Luhansk region. In 2014, he joined the illegal armed groups controlled by russia.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the offender has been fighting in eastern Ukraine as a member of russian occupying forces.

SSU investigators have issued in absentia a notice of suspicion to Polupoltinnykh under Article 28.1 and 438.1 of the CCU (violation of Articles 4, 13, 14, 15 of the Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War of 12.08.1949, which prohibits any unlawful act or omission by the Detaining Power that creates a serious threat to the health of a prisoner of war under its protection, committed by a group of persons).

The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General's Office.
