SSU declares russian generals suspects: they commanded air strike on Zhytomyr region in March 2022
The Security Service of Ukraine has collected evidence against two senior russian military commanders who planned and ordered the air strike on the town of Korosten in the Zhytomyr region on 9–10 March 2022.
As a result of the attack on residential areas and other civilian infrastructure in the town, one local resident was seriously injured, and two belarusian citizens were killed.
Furthermore, more than fifty private households on ten streets in the town were damaged to varying degrees.
A local water supply system, a commercial complex, and car service stations were also hit.
The investigation revealed that the decision to attack civilian targets in Korosten was taken by:
- colonel-general Aleksandr Chaiko, who was commander of russia’s Eastern military district at the time;
- lieutenant-general Vladimir Kravchenko, commander of the aviation grouping of russia’s East operational group of forces.
It has been established that, acting on the orders of these generals, their subordinates struck Korosten with at least twelve high-explosive and high-explosive fragmentation bombs manufactured by the russian plant of the Basalt Research and Production Association.
To carry out the attack, the ruscists deployed two bombers.
Based on the evidence collected, SSU investigators notified both commanders of their status as suspects under Articles 28.2 and 438.2 of the CCU – violation of the laws and customs of war, as set out in international treaties, combined with premeditated murder, committed by a group upon prior conspiracy.
Efforts to bring the culprits to justice are underway.
The investigation was conducted by the SSU Office in the Zhytomyr region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
