SSU declares russian general suspect in absentia for participating in Kherson’s occupation in 2022

The Security Service of Ukraine has gathered evidence against another high-ranking russian army officer who took part in the temporary occupation of Kherson region at the beginning of the full-scale war.

This is major general Aleksandr Kornev, commander of the 7th airborne assault (mountain) division of russia’s Southern military district.

As the investigation established, on 24 February 2022 Kornev commanded his division, which, together with other units of the Dnepr military grouping, carried out the occupation of Kherson oblast.

On the first day of the invasion, units of the 7th airborne assault division, together with other enemy units, entered the territory of Kherson region from the temporarily occupied Crimea.

After the seizure, the ruscists isolated the region, creating a humanitarian crisis during which they carried out mass repression against local population.

As a result of russia’s actions, thousands of civilians, including women and children, were killed and wounded. Hundreds of civilian infrastructure facilities were destroyed and damaged.

On the russian general’s orders, his subordinates set up checkpoints on the roads of Kherson region, which they used to abduct people and loot private property.

Based on the evidence, investigators of the Security Service notified Kornev of suspicion in absentia under Articles 28.2 and 437.2 of the CCU (crimes of aggression, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Kherson Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
