SSU declares russian prison guards suspects for torturing Ukrainian PoWs in Kursk region

The Security Service of Ukraine has collected evidence against another two russian citizens who tortured captured soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, the perpetrators are russian citizen Vitaly Vinogradov, head of the detention centre No. 1 in Kursk region, and his subordinate, inspector Aleksey Baranov.

They personally participated in the torture of captured Ukrainian defenders who were imprisoned in a russian jail.

There, the victims were beaten with hands, feet, rubber batons and carpentry hammers on various parts of the body.

In addition, Vinogradov involved other prison guards in the ‘collective’ beating of prisoners, who were held for a long time without food and proper clothing during the cold season.

Based on the evidence collected, SSU investigators notified Vinogradov and Baranov of suspicion in absentia under Article 438.1 of the CCU (cruel treatment of prisoners of war, violation of laws and customs of war provided for by international treaties).

Despite the perpetrators being in the aggressor state, efforts to bring them to justice are underway.

The investigation was conducted under the procedural supervision of the Office of the Prosecutor General.
