SSU prevents handover of classified data on air defence to Russian intelligence

The SSU Military Counterintelligence systematically counteracts to intelligence and subversive activities of Russian special services against the defence potential of our state. In Dnipropetrovsk region, a former official of a unit in the Air Force, Armed Forces of Ukraine, was exposed on collection of military secrets.

The individual attempted to hand over secret information to Russian special services. To do this, he planned to travel to Russia supposedly to visit his relatives.

During the operation, the SSU officers confiscated from the offender illegally obtained material on the organization of control systems of the Air Defence of Ukraine.

The investigation established that this former serviceman secretly collected classified data at the workplace. The individual illegally copied restricted defence-related information through unlawful interference in the unit’s information systems.

He stored the obtained secret material at his residence.

During the searches in his apartment, law enforcement officers found:

  • flash drives with secret military information;
  • computer equipment and communication devices with evidence of illegal activity.

The investigators are preparing notice of suspicion. The court is to choose measure of restraint.

The SSU initiated criminal proceedings under Article 258-3.1 (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organization) and Article 362.2 (unauthorized actions with information processed in computers, automated systems, computer networks, committed by a person entitled to access it) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The pre-trial investigation is underway.

The SSU Military Counterintelligence Department carried out the operation together with the SSU investigators in Dnipropetrovsk region under the supervision of Dnipropetrovsk Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the Military and Defence Spheres.
