SSU averts sale of equipment for illegal wiretapping and surveillance of citizens
In Kyiv, the SSU has prevented an illegal sale of special equipment for audio and video surveillance. Representatives of a company tried to circumvent the law and sell such devices to private individuals, although their license allows them to sell exclusively to government agencies.
This could have enabled their clients to carry out covert audio and video surveillance of citizens.
The items seized from the suspects were devices used by law enforcement in operational and investigative activity.
According to the investigation, the attempt to sell special equipment was carried out by the management of one of Kyiv licensed enterprises authorized to sell such goods within state procurement.
Apparently, they were looking for clients through personal connections, including among private security firms.
During the search of the company’s office, the law enforcement found:
- samples of special equipment,
- records,
- e-mails and other evidence of illegal activity.
The SSU investigators have notified the company’s technical director and his deputy of suspicion of illegal acquisition, sale or use of special technical means to obtain information.
The court is to decide on the measure of restraint.
The investigation is underway to establish all the circumstances of the offence and bring to justice other individuals involved.
The SSU Cyber Security Department carried out the operation together with the SSU Main Investigation Department under the supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
