SSU prevents assassination of Ukrainian defender targeted by ruscists in staged ‘date’ plot

The Security Service of Ukraine has thwarted a new terrorist attack in Chernihiv. Through timely counterintelligence actions, the SSU identified an agent of russia’s federal security service who was preparing to kill a Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen using an improvised explosive device.

The investigation found that the perpetrator planned to assemble the bomb and plant it near an apartment building where the soldier was expected to arrive. To lure the Ukrainian defender to the site of the planned attack, russian operatives created a fake dating-profile of a young woman, who then invited him to a ‘date’.

The SSU uncovered the enemy plot in advance, neutralised the explosive device, and prevented the murder.

According to the investigation, the planned terrorist attack was organised by a 35-year-old local resident and military deserter. He drew the attention of the FSB while looking for easy money on Telegram. After recruitment, he received instructions from his handler to construct an IED equipped with a mobile phone for remote detonation.

He also installed a hidden mini-camera with remote access for the FSB at the planned site. This would have allowed the enemy to monitor the soldier’s arrival and trigger the explosion at the precise moment.

During searches, the SSU seized components for the IED hidden in the terrorist’s backpack and a smartphone used for communication with his russian handler.

A pre-trial investigation, opened under Articles 14.1, 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law), is underway to bring all those involved in the crime to justice.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Chernihiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
