SSU detains belarusian KGB agent who spied on Ukraine’s northern border

As a result of counter-sabotage activities in the north of Ukraine, the SSU exposed another enemy agent.

The offender is a citizen of belarus with a permanent residence permit in Ukraine and has been living in Rivne region for a long time.

After russia launched its full-scale invasion, he was recruited by a belarusian KGB officer and carried out reconnaissance and subversive activities against Ukraine.

The agent’s assignment was to collect data on defence of Ukraine’s northern borders and movement of the AFU’s military equipment.

The SSU detained the suspect at his home when he tried to transmit information to belarus.

The investigation established that the man had come to the attention of the belarusian KGB as a former commander of a unit of the soviet airborne assault troops. At the time, he took an active part in the soviet-Afghan war.

For reconnaissance in Rivne region, the spy walked in the border area and gathered intelligence on the movement of Ukrainian Defence Forces.

Based on the evidence, the detained enemy accomplice was served a notice of suspicion.

The suspect is in custody. The investigation is ongoing.

The SSU Office in Rivne region carried out the operational and investigative activities jointly with the State Border Guard Service under the procedural supervision of Rivne Region Prosecutor’s Office.
