SSU detains FSB agent about to blow up railway track in front of freight train in Rivne region

The SSU Counterintelligence has neutralized another attempt of russia to carry out sabotage on Ukrainian railways.

As a result of the operation, the SSU detained an agent of russia’s federal security service who tried to plant an improvised explosive device under the railway track used for cargo transportation in Rivne oblast.

The enemy planned to remotely activate the IED while the train was moving and disrupt the supply of military aid to the front line.

However, the SSU detained the saboteur near the track as he was preparing to place the explosive.

According to the investigation, the traitor is an unemployed 23-year-old resident of Lviv region with a conviction for vandalism at Ukrainian military graves.

He came to the attention of the FSB as an ideological supporter of ruscism and because of his desire to move to russia, which he repeatedly wrote about on social media.

The agent received step-by-step instructions from his russian handlers: to arrive in Rivne region, take the explosives from a cache and install them at given coordinates on the tracks.

The investigation also identified that he had performed another task for russia – the asset collected information on the locations of the Defense Forces units in Lviv region.

The SSU has notified the detained individual of suspicion under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
  • 113.2 (sabotage, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Rivne Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
