SSU detains FSB agent who set fire to railway facilities and guided enemy missiles at targets in Chernihiv

The SSU has apprehended an agent of russia’s federal security service who operated in Chernihiv region. The traitor was adjusting missile strikes on the regional centre and preparing arson attacks on Ukrzaliznytsia [Ukrainian railways] facilities.

The aggressor planned to target bases of Ukrainian troops involved in the defence of Ukraine’s northern borders. According to intelligence, the occupiers planned to use Kh-59 aircraft missiles for the attack.

The FSB also tried to reconnoiter locations of enterprises that are carrying out state defence orders.

To do this, the enemy remotely recruited a 44-year-old employee of a local plant. The man came to the attention of the russian service because of his anti-Ukrainian comments on Telegram.

On the occupiers’ instructions, the agent drove around the area and covertly recorded locations of the Defence Forces.

He sent the collected data via a messenger app to his russian handler through a specially created chatbot administered by the FSB.

The asset was also ‘hunting’ for railway relay cabinets in the area.

The investigators documented that he had set fire to technological equipment near the main railway line using a flammable mixture.

The SSU detained the perpetrator in hot pursuit as he was preparing to commit new arson attacks on the railroad.

During the searches of the suspect’s and his relatives’ homes, 8 combat grenades, ammunition of various calibers and a phone with evidence of sabotage against Ukraine were seized.

SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
  • 113.2 (sabotage, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Chernihiv Office and SSU Military Counterintelligence jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of Chernihiv Region Prosecutor’s Office.
