SSU detains GRU agent preparing new strikes on Kyiv’s thermal power plants
The Security Service of Ukraine has detained another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’). He was preparing russia’s new missile attacks on thermal power plants in Kyiv region.
According to the SSU cyber units, the perpetrator was initially tasked by the occupiers with secretly walking around the perimeter of one of the thermal power plants to monitor its technical condition after the previous strike.
During the reconnaissance, he was to report to the occupiers in real time about everything he saw on the territory of the energy facility, with photographs of technological structures and equipment.
The SSU detained the agent red-handed while he was conducting reconnaissance. A smartphone he used to photograph the exterior of the TPP was seized from him at the scene.
The investigation established that the GRU’s order was carried out by a 26-year-old resident of Fastiv district, who previously served a sentence for murdering a minor.
The repeat offender came to the attention of the russian intelligence on a Telegram channel offering ‘easy money’.
For the payments, he agreed to guide russian air strikes at the energy infrastructure of Kyiv oblast in order to cut off power and heat to most of the region.
During the search of the suspect’s smartphone, an anonymous chat with his russian handler was found. The asset sent him messages using vanish mode.
SSU investigators have notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
