SSU detains GRU agent who guided russian jet drones at targets in Dnipropetrovsk region

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the SSU Military Counterintelligence has detained another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’). The perpetrator guided Geran-3 jet drones against defenders in the frontline region.

According to the investigation, this time the aggressor state recruited a local unemployed man. He was spotted by them while seeking ‘easy money’ through his nephew’s Telegram account.

For a promise of quick payments, the agent was tasked with identifying the positions of Ukrainian artillery, specifically HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, against which the enemy was preparing a drone attack.

The perpetrator also agreed to track the movement routes of Ukrainian armoured vehicles toward the front line.

To do this, he set up an ‘observation post’ on the roof of his house, from where he used binoculars and a phone camera to track the movements of Defence Forces convoys.

He then marked the coordinates on Google Maps and provided the data to his russian handler. To maintain secrecy, the agent used his nephew’s phone and a prearranged code.

For example, a specific combination of numbers indicated which military facility was being discussed or whether he was ready for an intelligence communication session.

The SSU apprehended the spotter as he was leaving his property to photograph Ukrainian military equipment from a closer distance.

Concurrently with the arrest, the SSU took action to secure the locations of Dnipropetrovsk region defenders.

Two smartphones, which he used to collect data and maintain contact with the GRU, were seized during the search.

SSU investigators have notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspect faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Military Counterintelligence jointly with the investigators of the SSU Office in Dnipropetrovsk region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
