SSU detains GRU agent who spied on Ukrainian artillery positions near Sloviansk

The SSU has apprehended another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) in Donetsk region. He was collecting information on locations and movements of Ukraine’s Defence Forces to launch russian strikes on them.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator is a 39-year-old local unemployed man recruited by the enemy through social media.

His main task was to find the positions of Ukrainian cannon and rocket artillery, which fires at russian assault groups trying to break through in Sloviansk sector.

The occupiers were also interested in the coordinates of Ukrainian checkpoints on key roads in the area.

To gather intelligence, the agent drove around the area, covertly recording the locations of Ukrainian defenders, and then reported to the GRU.

He communicated with the russians through a ‘contact’ – a native of Lyman who, after the temporary capture of the city, joined the enemy troops and is currently fighting on the eastern front.

After the strikes, the asset was supposed to conduct reconnaissance in the areas of possible hits and adjust repeated attacks.

The SSU identified the traitor and detained him on his attempt to pass intelligence to the aggressor.

During the search, a mobile phone with evidence of intelligence-gathering and sabotage against Ukraine was seized.

SSU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
