SSU detains agent of russia’s GRU who spied on Kupiansk defenders

The SSU has apprehended another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) in Kharkiv region. He was spying on the locations of Ukrainian troops holding defence in Kupiansk sector, currently actively attacked by the russians.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator is a 23-year-old unemployed individual from Chuhuiv district. He came to the attention of the GRU because of his pro-russian comments on Telegram channels.

After remote recruitment, the agent began to ride his bike around the area near the front line. He covertly photographed and videotaped locations and redeployment of the Defense Forces.

He also reconnoitered the directions of movement of the AFU railway trains that transported personnel, weapons and ammunition to the front.

The enemy needed this information to prepare combat operations and strikes on Kharkiv region.

The SSU Counterintelligence uncovered the traitor at an early stage, documented his crimes and detained him at his home. The SSU seized his mobile phone with evidence of sabotage against Ukraine.

SSU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
  • 109.3 (actions aimed at forceful change or overthrow of constitutional order).

The suspect is in custody without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Offices in Khmelnytskyi and Kharkiv regions under the procedural supervision of Kharkiv Region Prosecutor’s Office.
