SSU detains GRU agent spying on Defense Forces in northern Ukraine

In Chernihiv region, the SSU Counterintelligence has apprehended another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’). The perpetrator was spying on Ukrainian troops defending the country’s northern border.

On GRU orders, the agent was to identify and pass on to the occupiers the coordinates of local checkpoints, command and observation posts, and logistics centers of the Defense Forces.

He also attempted to reconnoiter the main routes used by military transport.

According to the investigation, the enemy agent is 42-year-old unemployed man from Chernihiv region who was looking for ‘easy money’ on Telegram channels.

After recruitment, the traitor began to walk around the border area and secretly record locations of Ukrainian defenders on his phone.

The SSU Counterintelligence identified the enemy accomplice, documented his crimes and detained him.

Simultaneously, action was taken to protect the locations of the Defense Forces.

A mobile phone used by the GRU agent to contact the occupiers was seized during searches.

SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Chernihiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
