SSU detains enemy agents preparing attacks on thermal and hydroelectric power plants in Kyiv region (video)
The Security Service of Ukraine has detained another two agents of russia’s military intelligence (‘the GRU’) who were involved in preparing russian air strikes on Kyiv region. The occupiers’ main targets were thermal and hydroelectric power plants in Kyiv oblast.
To direct the enemy fire at these facilities, the perpetrators separately surveyed the area, recorded the coordinates of the power installations, and assessed their technical condition after the attacks.
The investigation established that russia’s tasks were carried out by two unemployed persons from Odesa and Khmelnytskyi regions. Aged 19 and 21, they came to the GRU’s attention when they were looking for easy money on Telegram in autumn this year.
After remote recruitment, the russian military intelligence sent the agents to Kyiv and adjacent areas to adjust a new series of missile and drone strikes.
During the reconnaissance, the spies also photographed and marked on Google Maps the geolocation of checkpoints on local roads.
The SSU cyber units caught the agents red-handed in Kyiv when they were collecting intelligence near potential targets.
During the searches, smartphones with anonymous chats in messengers were seized from the suspects. They used these to contact their russian handler.
Based on the evidence, Security Service investigators notified both detainees of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspects are in custody without bail and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region under the procedural supervision of Kyiv City and Regional Prosecutor’s Offices.
