SSU detains GRU agents reconnoitring Oreshnik strike consequences in Lviv region (video)

The SSU Counterintelligence has detained two agents of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) who were helping russia assess the consequences of the Oreshnik strike on civilian infrastructure in Lviv region on the night of January 9, 2026.

According to the investigation, the reconnaissance of the aftermath of this attack was carried out by a 64-year-old resident of Mukachevo, recruited remotely by the GRU, as well as his 22-year-old unemployed neighbor.

The SSU established that, on the enemy’s orders, the junior agent travelled from Zakarpattia to Lviv region after the attack. He visited the locations in the area of the missile strike one by one, photographed them, and recorded their coordinates on Google Maps.

He then passed the information to the senior agent, who remained in Mukachevo and reported directly to his GRU handler.

The Security Service of Ukraine detained both spotters simultaneously: one at his home in Mukachevo, and the other in Lviv region, when he was scouting near the site of the ballistic missile strike.

The occupiers needed the information on the extent of damage to use it in their information and psychological operations and to plan new attacks.

Electronic devices with evidence of working for the russian intelligence were seized from the suspects during the searches. The SSU also intercepted conversations between one of the agents and their handler. These audio recordings have been added to the criminal proceedings file.

SSU investigators notified the detainees of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU – high treason, committed under martial law.

The suspects are in custody and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Zakarpattia region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
