SSU detains GRU agent who prepared russia’s January 1 drone attack on Kyiv
In Kyiv, the SSU Military Counterintelligence has apprehended an agent of russian military intelligence (the ‘GRU’).
According to the investigation, she prepared the coordinates for the drone attack launched against the capital of Ukraine on 1 January 2025.
The enemy’s priority targets were administrative buildings of state institutions and energy generating enterprises.
To program the enemy kamikaze drones to hit Ukrainian targets, the agent turned on the GPS coordinates on her phone and took photos of the objects so that the file properties would contain their exact geolocation.
The agent sent the photos to her russian handler via an anonymous chat in a messenger app.
During her reconnaissance sorties, she also spied on air defence positions protecting Kyiv.
The SSU documented the woman conducting reconnaissance close to the base of a Ukrainian military radar station near the capital.
The suspect was detained in rented apartment in Kyiv when she was trying to pass a new portion of intelligence to the russian GRU.
The enemy agent is a 27-year-old local unemployed woman who was looking for easy money on Telegram.
There, she was approached by the russian military intelligence and offered money in exchange for cooperation.
During the searches of the detainee’s home, the investigators seized a mobile phone with evidence of cooperation with the GRU and multiple SIM cards that she used to conceal her communication with the occupiers.
The SSU has now served her a notice of suspicion under Article 114-2.2 of the CCU (unauthorized dissemination of information on the location of the AFU or other lawful military formations, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out jointly with the investigators of the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region under the procedural supervision of Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
