SSU detains IT specialist recruiting spotters for russia’s FSB

The Security Service of Ukraine has detained another two agents of russia’s federal security service. One of them is an IT specialist from the Cherkasy region who set up new channels for the enemy to recruit local residents.

According to the investigation, he registered mobile numbers of Ukrainian carriers to create fake accounts on social media.

The perpetrator passed the accounts to the russian service to conduct recruitment operations supposedly on behalf of Ukrainian citizens.

The agent also opened online accounts under the names of front men, which the aggressor state planned to use to covertly finance its spy networks.

To do this, he sought drug addicts and unemployed individuals who, in exchange for a one-time cash payment, agreed to provide their personal information to him.

The IT specialist also personally selected potential ‘candidates’ for recruitment and passed their contact information to the FSB.

The SSU Counterintelligence documented how the suspect helped the FSB contact an unemployed resident of the Rivne region.

On enemy instructions, the newly recruited agent guided russian airstrikes at targets in western Ukraine.

To do that, he marked the geolocations of the Defence Forces on Google Maps and sent them via a messenger app to his FSB handler.

The SSU exposed the spotter at an early stage of his activities and detained him at his home.

At the same time, the other enemy accomplice, the IT specialist, was also apprehended. During the searches of both suspects’ homes, smartphones and computer equipment with evidence of activities on russia’s behalf were seized.

SSU investigators notified the detainees of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspects are in custody without bail and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operations were carried out by the SSU Offices in Cherkasy and Rivne regions under the procedural supervision of the Cherkasy Region Prosecutor’s Office.
