SSU detains demobilized Ukrainian conscript who started working for russian military intelligence
The SSU has apprehended an agent of russian military intelligence in Zaporizhzhia. He was spying on Ukrainian troops involved in combat operations on the southern front.
According to the SSU Counterintelligence, the enemy was interested in the geolocations of command posts, ammunition depots and fortifications of the Defense Forces in Zaporizhzhia sector.
The occupiers also wanted to know the main routes, approximate number and types of the AFU military equipment heading to the front line.
To obtain these data, they recruited a 22-year-old demobilized conscript who had previously served in one of Ukraine’s military garrisons.
The young man came to the enemy’s attention because of his parents, who live in the temporarily occupied part of Zaporizhzhia region and cooperate with the russian intelligence.
In May this year, he retired from the army and settled in Zaporizhzhia. Later, he was contacted by a serving member of the 316th
intelligence center of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (‘the GRU’) based in Sevastopol. This handler has already been identified by the SSU.
At first, the GRU requested from the agent the coordinates of combat units and logistics warehouses of the military unit in which he had served.
Then, on russia’s instructions, the traitor began to walk around the frontline city and covertly record locations of the Armed Forces units and bridges they use to move towards the frontline.
The aggressor planned to use the intelligence to prepare attacks on the Defense Forces using guided aerial bombs, kamikaze drones and heavy artillery.
The SSU worked proactively and detained the agent ‘red-handed’ when he was conducting reconnaissance near a military facility.
The suspect’s cell phone, which he used to communicate with his the russian service, was seized.
Based on the evidence, SSU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Zaporizhzhia Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
