SSU detains former party of regions member who guided russian ‘Grad’ strikes at border areas in Sumy region
As a result of a counter-sabotage operation in Sumy oblast, the SSU detained an FSB agent who collected intelligence on the defence of Ukraine’s north-eastern borders.
He passed the gathered data to the aggressor to adjust the enemy shelling of Ukrainian troops, including from ‘Grad’ multiple rocket launchers.
According to the investigation, the suspect is a Sumy resident, a former local ‘functionary’ of the banned party of regions.
A while before russia’s full-scale invasion, the man was recruited by an officer of the FSB border guard unit.
He came to the enemy’s attention because of his periodic trips to russia to meet relatives.
During one of these visits to the aggressor state, the agent was instructed to conduct reconnaissance and sabotage against Ukraine and was put on standby.
After 24 February 2022, the FSB handler contacted the asset and requested intelligence on locations of the Defence Forces in the border territories of the region.
The traitor drove in the target area and covertly recorded locations of Ukrainian defenders.
The SSU detained the suspect red-handed when he was trying to pass information on fortifications of the AFU and the State Border Guard Service to the aggressor.
The agent used several messenger apps to send the intelligence to the FSB, deleting messages immediately after each ‘communication session’.
During the searches at the suspect’s home, the following were found:
- a russian passport and a work record book;
- a party card of the party of regions, which is banned in Ukraine;
- pro-kremlin symbols;
- mobile phones and computer equipment used for communication with russian intelligence.
Based on the evidence, SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion of high treason committed under martial law (Article 111.2 of the CCU).
The offender is currently in custody, facing life imprisonment.
The SSU Sumy Office carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
