Vinnytsia region: SSU detains former ‘DNR’ militant about to flee to unrecognised Transnistria

The SSU has tracked down another militant of the terrorist organisation ‘DNR’, who had been hiding from justice for a long time for participating in the war against Ukraine.

The suspect was detained near the border with unrecognised Transnistria, where he tried to escape from prosecution.

According to the investigation, the apprehended individual is a resident of Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region. In 2014, he joined the so-called ‘slavic regiment’, a russian-controlled terrorist group in eastern Ukraine.

While in the ‘regiment’, he stood ‘duty’ at enemy checkpoints and stopped cars of Ukrainian citizens trying to leave the temporarily occupied part.

During such ‘stops’, the militants created artificial pretexts for kidnapping people and ‘confiscating’ their cars.

In addition, the militant administered several pro-kremlin groups on the banned social network Vkontakte, calling Donbas residents to join the terrorist ‘DNR’.

However, before russia’s full-scale invasion, he left the occupiers’ unit and secretly moved to Ukraine-controlled territory and tried to ‘lay low’.

The SSU established his location and detained him in one of the border districts of Vinnytsia oblast.

During the search, the SSU found a mobile phone and SIM cards with evidence of his communication with ‘DNR’ militants.

SSU investigators served the offender a notice of suspicion under Article 258-3.1 of the CCU (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organisation).

The suspect is in custody, facing up to 15 years in prison.

The SSU Vinnytsia Office carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
