SSU detains russian accomplices who attempted to derail freight locomotive in Chernihiv region

The SSU has detained two more russian agents in Chernihiv region. They were preparing to blow up a section of railway track in an attempt to derail a freight locomotive and disrupt transport logistics in northern Ukraine.

SSU officers detained the suspects red-handed as they were heading to the planned sabotage site. At the scene, law enforcement officers seized two improvised explosive devices that the perpetrators intended to plant beneath the railway tracks operated by Ukrainian Railways.

According to the investigation, the operation was carried out on behalf of the enemy by a serviceman from Kyiv who had been mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine but went absent without official leave. He agreed to cooperate with russia after being recruited via a Telegram channel in exchange for promises of assistance in illegally leaving Ukraine.

The traitor recruited an acquaintance – a student at one of the capital’s higher education institutions – to carry out subversive activities in the interests of the russian federation.

To prepare the sabotage operation, the suspect bought chemical components, mobile phones and other materials needed to manufacture IEDs.

She handed the purchased items over to her ‘partner’, who assembled the explosives according to instructions from a handler in the russian federation.

Before planting the IEDs, the agents carried out several reconnaissance missions along the railway lines to identify the most vulnerable section for a bombing.

During searches of the suspects’ temporary residence, law enforcement seized components used in manufacturing explosives, including chemicals, laboratory equipment, detonators, and communication devices.

SSU Investigators have notified both detainees of suspicion under Articles 15.3, 28.2, 113.2 of the CCU (attempted sabotage, committed by a group of persons acting in concert under martial law).

The suspects are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of their property.

The operation was carried out by SSU officers in Chernihiv region in coordination with the National Police, under the procedural supervision of the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
