SSU detains russian mole in AFU combat brigade in Kharkiv region

The SSU Military Counterintelligence, with the assistance of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, detained an enemy agent in the combat zone in Kharkiv region. He is a contract soldier of one of the AFU brigades who worked for russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’).

The traitor passed to the adversary the locations of combat units in which he served on Kupiansk direction.

It has been documented how the agent used a messenger app to contact his GRU handler and transmitted the coordinates of his and other units on the front line.

The enemy was most interested in the coordinates of staffs, backup command posts, fortifications, and firing positions of the Defense Forces.

To communicate with the GRU, the mole used voice messages dictated in an anonymous chat.

Using the geolocations given by the agent, russians were preparing missile and bomb strikes, before which the traitor had to leave the perimeter of the target site.

The SSU Military Counterintelligence uncovered these plans at an early stage and averted them. After action was taken to protect the locations of the Defense Forces, the traitor was detained near the line of combat.

Two phones, which he used to communicate with the GRU, were seized from him during the search.

According to the investigation, the man was recruited remotely by the occupiers in January this year. The SSU also identified his handler, a serviceman of russian military intelligence, stationed on the eastern front.

SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out jointly with SSU investigators in Kharkiv region under the procedural supervision of Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Eastern Region.
