SSU detains russian spy who scouted positions of Ukrainian Defence Forces near northern border
In the course of counter-sabotage efforts in the border areas of Chernihiv oblast, the SSU exposed an agent of the russian fsb.
The individual was covertly collecting intelligence on deployment and movement of Ukrainian troops in the region.
The spy was interested in the data on number of personnel, military equipment and weapons of the Defence Forces near the state border.
The SSU derailed ruscists’ plans and detained their accomplice on his attempt to pass classified information to russia. A mobile phone with evidence of his communication with an employee of the fsb was seized from the suspect.
According to the investigation, the detainee is a russian citizen, who for several years lived in one of the border villages of Chernihiv region and was employed in passenger transportation.
The man regularly travelled to russia to visit relatives. In this way, he came to attention of russian intelligence.
During one of these trips, he was recruited by an fsb officer to carry out reconnaissance and sabotage in the north of Ukraine.
For this purpose, the enemy agent received an operational nickname and detailed instructions on collection and transmission of secret information. Anonymous messenger apps were used for communication.
SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion. Court chose custody as a measure of restraint.
The SSU Office in Chernihiv Region carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
