SSU detains russian spy and his informant preparing breakthrough of sabotage and reconnaissance groups in Sumy region (video)

The Security Service of Ukraine has detained two enemy accomplices on the border of Sumy region. One of them is a russian citizen living in Ukraine who has recently received a task to spy on the Defense Forces.

The perpetrator was preparing a breakthrough of russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups into Sumy oblast.

The adversary hoped to penetrate the northeastern region of Ukraine from Bryansk region of russia.

To plan the route of the enemy reconnaissance groups and evade the Defense Forces positions, the russian had to identify the locations of Ukrainian troops in the border area of Shostka district.

To carry out this task, the agent engaged his accomplice, a 60-year-old local unemployed man who wished for the occupation of the region.

The Service documented how, under the guise of fishing trips, the men drove around the border area and covertly recorded military installations.

During the reconnaissance sorties, they also tried to identify the places of hits and pass the data on the consequences of russian strikes to the FSB.

The SSU documented the crimes and detained the spies at a checkpoint they were trying to cross after conducting additional reconnaissance near a Defense Forces base.

Mobile phones they used to gather intelligence and communicate with the FSB were seized during searches.

SSU investigators have notified the detainees of suspicion.

The suspects are in custody and face up to 12 years in prison.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Sumy region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
