Drug courier detained by SSU sentenced to 6 years in prison for smuggling cocaine worth UAH 10 mln

Following the SSU investigation, one of the members of a transnational criminal group was sentenced to 6 years in prison. The individual was a member of an extensive network of drug couriers who imported cocaine from Latin America to Ukraine.

The pre-trial investigation established that the foreigner and his accomplice tried to smuggle almost 2 kg of cocaine across the state border. They hid part of the packaged drug among personal belongings, while part of cocaine - 90 capsules – the courier tried to smuggle in the gastrointestinal tract. The black market value of the seized batch is almost UAH 10 mln (USD 357,000).

The law enforcement detained both offenders as a result of a multi-stage special operation at Boryspil International Airport in July 2021.

The court in Cherkasy found one of the detainees guilty of crimes under Article 305.3 (drug smuggling) and Article 307.3 (illegal production, manufacture, purchase, storage, transportation, shipment or sale of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances or their analogues) of the CCU and sentenced him to 6 years in prison. The verdict came into force.

The indictment against the other drug courier has been sent to court, the suspect is in custody.

The SSU Office in Cherkasy region carried out the special operation together with the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and Kyiv Customs under the supervision of Cherkasy Region Prosecutor’s Office.
