Following SSU’s investigation, member of russian tank crew who fired at civilians in Mariupol sentenced to 12 years in prison

The SSU collected irrefutable evidence of crimes committed by a militant of the ‘dnr’ terrorist organization with the nickname ‘Phil’, which led to court convicting him to 12 years behind bars.

SSU investigators established that as a gunner of a T72 tank he had fired at least 20 shots at residential high-rise buildings in Mariupol.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine captured the ruscist in late April near the village of Rivnopil, Donetsk region. The AFU servicemen hit his tank and took the wounded militant prisoner.

The investigation uncovered that that this tankman had had a ‘long career’ in the ‘dnr’ terrorist groups, in particular he:

  • joined the terrorists back in 2014;
  • fought in the ‘5th company of the 2nd motorized rifle battalion of the 7th brigade of the 9th marine regiment of the ‘dnr’ as a machine gunner;
  • was a rifleman in the Somalia, Chechen and Pyatnashka battalions;
  • ‘served’ in the fake financial and economic police and in the ‘2nd platoon of the 2nd company of the tank battalion of the 9th marine regiment of the ‘dnr’s people’s militia’;
  • at the start of russia’s full-scale invasion, officially joined the occupiers’ 8th army as a T72 tank gunner.

Based the evidence collected by the SSU, court found the accused guilty of crimes under the two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • 111.1 (high treason);
  • 260.2 (creation of unlawful armed groups or participation in their activity).

Investigators of the SSU Main Directorate in Donetsk and Luhansk Regions carried out the pre-trial investigation under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
