Following SSU investigation, enemy agent sentenced to 13 years in prison for terrorist attack in Zhytomyr region in September 2025
Based on the evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine, an enemy agent, exposed by the SSU in September 2025 in connection with a terrorist attack in Zhytomyr region, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The investigation established that the agent planted an improvised explosive device near a cemetery in Korostyshiv, which was detonated remotely by the russian intelligence. A resident of Berdychiv was killed in the explosion.
The Security Service, together with the National Police, detained the perpetrator within eight hours of the blast.
The enemy accomplice is a drug addict from Korostyshiv who had been recruited by the russian intelligence services. He came to the attention of his handlers while searching for ‘easy money’ on Telegram channels.
After the recruitment, the man agreed to carry out a terrorist attack in exchange for the promise of a quick payment.
To carry out the attack, the agent rented an apartment in Zhytomyr, where, following instructions from his handlers, he assembled an explosive device and disguised it as a fire extinguisher.
He then planted the bomb at the designated site and concealed it under rubbish. Nearby, he placed a smartphone in a tree and configured it for remote access by the russian intelligence officers.
Using the smartphone’s camera, the enemy operatives monitored the victim’s arrival at the site and remotely detonated the IED.
Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, the accused was found guilty under three Articles the CCU:
- 258.3 (terrorist act resulting in the death of a person);
- 263.1 (unlawful acquisition and possession of an explosive device);
- 263-1 (unlawful manufacture of explosive substances or an explosive device).
Given the suspect’s cooperation with the investigation, the court sentenced him to 13 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The investigation was conducted by SSU Office in Zhytomyr region in cooperation with the National Police, under the procedural supervision of the Zhytomyr Specialised Defence Prosecutor’s Office of the Central Region.
