Following SSU investigation, FSB agent sentenced to 15 years in prison for preparing terrorist attacks in northern Ukraine

Based on evidence collected by the Security Service, a member of the FSB agent network, dismantled in the spring this year, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

At that time, the SSU Counterintelligence detained nine enemy agents while they were preparing a series of terrorist attacks and sabotage in four regions of Ukraine.

The perpetrators were preparing explosions in residential areas and near the bases of the Defence Forces.

One more ‘target’ was key bridges and main lines of Ukrainian railways, important for the frontline logistics.

Now, one of the FSB agents has been sentenced to prison. Following russia’s instructions, he took an improvised explosive device from a cache to carry out a terrorist attack in northern Ukraine.

Before planting the bomb at the target location, the man was to equip it with a smartphone for remote activation by the russian special services.

The terrorist then planned to conceal the IED at the site of the attack and install a ‘video trap’ nearby in the form of a hidden mini-camera with remote access for russia’s federal security service.

The SSU uncovered the plot at an early stage and detained the agent in a rented apartment while he was equipping the explosives with remote detonation devices.

An IED with an electric detonator and other components were seized during the search.

Based on the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
  • 263.1 (illegal handling of explosives).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kirovohrad region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
