Following SSU investigation, GRU agent sentenced to 15 years in prison for spying in Zaporizhzhia region

Based on the evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine, an agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’), exposed in Zaporizhzhia in July 2025, has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and confiscation of property.

The investigation revealed that the perpetrator was a conscript in a local military unit who had been recruited by the ruscists. He passed information to the russians about his battalion and neighbouring units of the Defence Forces.

The russian intelligence was particularly interested in information on the deployment, strength and armament of Ukrainian troops in the Zaporizhzhia sector.

The traitor also made photocopies of documents concerning the deployment of new Ukrainian Armed Forces units on the southern front line for the enemy.

The SSU identified the agent, documented his crimes and detained him. Simultaneously, action was taken to protect the locations of the Defence Forces within the enemy’s reconnaissance zone.

According to the investigation, the enemy accomplice was part of a russian spy network which the SSU neutralised when exposing the mole.

The Security Service also detained a resident agent of the enemy cell: the rector of a local Ukrainian Orthodox Church (moscow patriarchate) church, who was working for russia’s 316th intelligence centre.

The SSU had previously exposed a third accomplice who is currently serving a prison sentence for guiding strikes on Zaporizhzhia.

Mobile phones and computer equipment containing evidence of intelligence gathering and contacts with the enemy were found during searches of the detainees’ premises.

Based on evidence collected by the SSU, the GRU agent was found guilty of high treason under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
