Following SSU investigation, enemy agent convicted to 15 years in prison for attempt to derail freight train

Based on evidence collected by the Security Service, another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. The Service exposed him in May 2025 in Kyiv region while he was attempting to derail a freight train.

According to the investigation, to carry out the sabotage, the agent manufactured improvised explosive devices intended to derail Ukrzaliznytsia rolling stock.

The SSU detained the perpetrator at an early stage at his workplace in Kyiv region.

The enemy’s task was carried out by a resident of Chernihiv oblast who worked as an elevator repair and maintenance technician in Kyiv.

The man came to the attention of the russian intelligence when he posted pro-kremlin comments in Telegram channel chat rooms.

After the recruitment, the agent received instructions from his russian handler to carry out sabotage aimed at disrupting the Defence Forces’ transportation logistics.

He manufactured the bombs himself in his garage and hid them in a cache at a cemetery near the planned sabotage site.

Later, he retrieved the IEDs and installed them on the railroad tracks. The SSU documented his actions and dismantled the bombs, then detained the agent.

A smartphone, which he used to coordinate his activities with his russian handler, was seized during the search.

Based on the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Articles 28.2 and 113.2 of the CCU (sabotage, committed by a group, acting on prior conspiracy, under martial law).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region under the procedural supervision of Kyiv Region Prosecutor’s Office.
