Following SSU investigation, GRU agent who planned murders of Ukrainian servicemen in Chernihiv region sentenced to 15 years in prison

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’), who operated in Chernihiv region, has been convicted to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The investigation established that the perpetrator was preparing for physical elimination of Ukrainian soldiers in the region.

To do this, he planned to use improvised explosive devices or kamikaze drones.

The SSU cyber units thwarted enemy intentions and apprehended the agent in November 2024 at his home in Chernihiv.

The traitor is a 45-year-old local unemployed man who came to the attention of the occupiers because of his pro-russian comments on Telegram.

After remote recruitment, the agent set fire to a military pickup truck and a transformer substation on Ukrainian railways.

The man was also preparing ruscist air strikes on Chernihiv. The aggressor’s targets were military hospitals and AFU air defense radar systems.

During further contacts with the russian GRU officer, the traitor expressed his wishes to carry out terrorist attacks directly against Ukrainian servicemen.

The SSU foiled the GRU’s plans. Following the Service’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
  • 114-2.2 (unauthorized dissemination of information on movement, transfer or location of the AFU or other lawful military formations, committed under martial law).

The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
