Following SSU investigation, former party of regions member sentenced to 15 years in prison for adjusting russian strikes on Sumy region
Based on evidence collected by the Security Service, another FSB agent who spied in Sumy region has been convicted to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The enemy spotter turned out to be a 65-year-old former ‘functionary’ of the local branch of the banned party of regions.
He collected coordinates of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Border Guard Service units for the enemy. The ruscists used the intelligence to prepare strikes with long-range artillery and guided aerial bombs.
According to the investigation, the former party member came to the attention of russia’s federal security service even before the start of the full-scale war through his trips to relatives in russia.
After 24 February 2022, an FSB serviceman contacted the man remotely and asked for intelligence on the deployment of the Defence Forces in the border region.
To gather the data, the traitor drove his car around the area and covertly recorded locations of Ukrainian defenders.
The traitor also collected information on the defenders of Sumy region during communication with acquaintances. In conversations, he spoke approvingly about the enemy shelling and glorified the ruscists.
The SSU detained the agent in June 2023 while he was conducting reconnaissance near fortified areas of Ukrainian troops.
His russian passport, membership card of the banned party of regions, and a smartphone with several messenger apps, used for contacting the FSB, were seized during the search.
Based on the Service’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under two Articles of the CCU:
- 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
- 436-2.1 (justification, recognition as lawful, denial of russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, glorification of its participants).
The investigation was conducted by the SSU Sumy Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
