Following SSU investigation, enemy agent convicted to 15 years in prison for adjusting russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro energy infrastructure

Based on the evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine, an agent of russia’s military intelligence (‘the GRU’) has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. The SSU apprehended him in August last year for adjusting air strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro.

The investigation established that the man had found employment at a local energy company in order to identify and provide to the enemy the coordinates of substations supplying frontline cities.

The perpetrator responsible for adjusting the air strikes turned out to be a 28-year-old graduate of Zaporizhzhia Electrical Engineering College. He came to the GRU’s attention when he published pro-kremlin posts in Telegram chat rooms.

After recruitment, the agent was given instructions to get a job at a leading power generation company in Zaporizhzhia.

There, under the cover of work trips, he moved around the city documenting the aftermath of enemy attacks on power substations and other energy facilities.

He also reported to his russian handler on the stages of restoration of damaged power facilities and periodically travelled to Dnipro to collect similar intelligence.

To communicate with the GRU, the traitor used an anonymous chat in a messenger app, where he sent the geolocations of energy-generating infrastructure.

The SSU Counterintelligence uncovered the mole, documented his crimes, and took action to protect potential targets.

In the final stage of the special operation, the agent was detained. A smartphone, which he used to contact his handler, was seized during the search.

Based on the Service’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Zaporizhzhia Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
