Following SSU investigation, FSB agent who spied in Sumy region sentenced to 15 years in prison
Based on evidence collected by the Security Service, another agent of russia’s federal security service, who spied on the Defense Forces in Sumy region, has been convicted to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The investigation established that the perpetrator tried to identify the locations of large concentrations of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel in the border area of the region.
To gather intelligence, the agent walked in the area and secretly recorded locations of Ukrainian troops on his phone camera, pretending to be talking on the phone.
Another of his tasks was to look for potential candidates for recruitment to the FSB’s agent network, which the enemy intended to set up in the region.
The SSU detained the agent in January 2024 at his home in Sumy while he was preparing for a new reconnaissance sortie near the northern border.
The aggressor’s accomplice is a 56-year-old local resident who came to the attention of the FSB when he posted anti-Ukrainian comments on Odnoklassniki social network.
After remote recruitment, the asset began collecting information for russia to prepare new air strikes and help enemy sabotage and reconnaissance break through into Sumy region.
Based on the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under four Articles of the CCU:
- 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
- 110.1 (encroachment on territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine);
- 109.2 (actions aimed at forceful change or overthrow of the constitutional order or seizure of state power);
- 436-2.2 (denial of russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine).
The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Sumy region under the procedural supervision of regional Prosecutor’s Office.
