Following SSU investigation, traitor who installed webcams near Mykolaiv port to spy on Ukrainian ships sentenced to 15 years in prison

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, another enemy agent, who operated in Mykolaiv, has been convicted to 15 years of imprisonment. The perpetrator was spying on the ships of Ukraine’s Defence Forces and the Merchant Navy in the Black Sea.

To track the locations of Ukrainian vessels, he installed several webcams on technological facilities near the port.

These video devices were supposed to record maritime and river traffic in real time, providing remote access to the russian intelligence.

During a special operation in February this year, the SSU found and deactivated the hidden cameras and then detained the suspect as he was trying to install another video device.

The investigation revealed that the agent’s other task was to identify ground facilities of the Defence Forces, including military hospitals, training centers and checkpoints.

According to the investigation, the enemy asset was an electrician at a local port company and was remotely recruited by the occupiers in late 2023.

He came to their attention because of his activity in pro-kremlin Telegram channels, where he supported russia’s armed aggression.

After recruitment, the agent communicated with his handler through an anonymous chat in a messenger app.

During the search, a mobile phone with evidence of his communication with the aggressor was seized. The investigators also found tools for installing video cameras and boxes from them.

Based on the evidence, the court found the accused guilty under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Mykolaiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
