Following SSU’s investigation, court sentences GRU agent who operated in Zaporizhzhia region to 15 years behind bars

Zhovtnevyi District Court of Zaporizhzhia has convicted a member of an intelligence network of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the russian armed forces (aka GRU) to 15 years in prison.

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, the accused was found guilty of treason.

The agent was detained during a multi-stage special operation in Zaporizhzhia. He carried out the assignments he got from his daughter-in-law, who lives in the temporarily occupied Melitopol and was recruited by the GRU after russia’s full-scale invasion.

The man was to conduct surveillance of the movement of Ukrainian Defence Forces and take photographs of strategic and military facilities.

He sent the obtained information to his handler through secure communication channels. Further, occupiers used it to plan and prepare a series of missile and artillery strikes on the city.

The SSU detained the traitor when he was passing intelligence on location of depots with military equipment and ammunition to the enemy.

Following the SSU’s investigation, the court found the agent guilty under two articles of the CCU:

  • 111.2 (treason under martial law);
  • 28.2 (committing criminal offense by a group of persons, a group of persons upon a prior conspiracy, by an organized group or a criminal organization).

The SSU Office in Zaporizhzhia Region carried out the special operation to neutralize the agent network under the procedural supervision of Zaporizhzhia Region Prosecutor’s Office.
